Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus)

In the primate section of the zoo, a lively Barbary macaque named Milo never fails to entertain. With his cheeky personality and love for mischief, Milo often leads his troop in playful antics, from swinging on ropes to raiding food enrichment puzzles faster than anyone else.

Milo’s favorite activity is playing with water. Keepers often set up a shallow pool with floating fruits for the macaques to “fish” out. While the others carefully grab treats, Milo dives right in, splashing and tossing the fruits around before finally eating them. His playful nature has earned him the nickname “Water King” among the zoo staff.

Despite his playful side, Milo has a serious role in the zoo’s conservation message. Barbary macaques are endangered due to habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Milo’s story helps visitors understand the importance of protecting these intelligent primates and their ecosystems in North Africa.
